too much volume

hi guys,
i have decided to grow my hair shoulder lenght but one problem is i have too much volume any advice on how to grow it long but keep the thickness less?
advive really appreciated

Visit a hairstylist, definitaly not a BARBERSHOP! tell the stylist to thin it out AND not to cut it off.
explain that you are growing it long, but don't want the bulk.

Don't get it thinned! Trust me! It'll come back with an even thicker look when it grows out.

I wholeheartedly agree. When thin the hair, they'll use either thinning shears or a razor (both will do about the same thing), they'll take a clump of hair and hold it straight out from the head--it'll look something like this:

. . . then after the razor or thinning shears do their work, the hair that's left will look like this:

The reason you won't want this is that you'll be left with long hair at the ends, but you'll also have a clump of hair much shorter underneath tending to poke straight up and out. It'll look "not quite right."
Plus, when it starts to grow out, you'll have a line where they cut that will look "not quite right," and you'll have to have it thinned out again, and when they do that, they'll cut some of the previously thinned hair along with a bunch of your long hair.
I'd recommend putting some goop on your hair to weigh it down a bit; something like a "shine" product should help. Look for something like a Citrishine (available at Wally World) or its generic equivalent . . . I use stuff from the Dollar store, it's got the same silicone oils (cyclomethicone, dimethicone, phenyl trimethicone) that makes the high priced stuff work, and if you don't put too much on, it won't make your hair look greasy. It'll just put a bit of shine on it while weighing it down. I'd try this first . . .

I have very full, curly hair. It gets very bulky if I don't do something with it. I have found that Dep level 8 non alcoholic gel works wonders. I work a generous amount in when my hair is wet, then style. If I just leave it, then I have the wet slicked back look. But, if I brush it out after it dries, then I have soft semi straightned hair with much reduced volume. I am guessing that this is what you are after. Try this first before doing any cutting. You will probably find that you do not need to cut at all.
