Question on Cobain-style hair

Hey everyone, I've been a fan of Nirvana and the Seattle scene forever, and I only recently decided that I'd get myself a fitting hair style. I stopped cutting it in September, and I've just now passed the stage where the bangs get into my eyes every time I head-bang. However, seeing as how I'm 16, my parents are really fundamentalist Christians and still make me treat it like it's short, washing it with dandruff shampoo and getting it "trimmed" every month or so, which sucks because I know it's cutting back on the growth rate. Now that I've finished the ranting, here are my questions -
A) how long does it take hair to get Cobain-length?
B) any tips on maintaining it during the awkward phase, particularly with the aim of getting it to this particular length?
C) how many of you have this cut, and what can you tell me about living with it?

first of all, come on, not the cobaine look. Sure his music souded ok but if your parents make you wash your hair first with dandruff shampoo(wich i heard will kill it) will destoy the whole cobaine look, the guy never washes it, it is mostly dirty. I guess if you want his look go for it, its your hair. Personally I would try to get your own hair look. The whole trimming thig is crap, your never going to get it long if you get it cutt off each time. Hey and tell your parents that you are so connected to Jesus and god that you want to show people by having jesuses like long hair.

Well, I mean, it's not like I comply with most of the nonsense they say. A lot of times I empty the dandruff shampoo down the drain a little every time I'm in the shower just so it seems I'm using it. And I tell her that the trimming is crap, but she's just like "Well, the hairdresser says it makes it grow faster to cut it, so if you want long hair, you have to cut it to make it grow." Well, of flippin' course the haircutter says that, 'cause that's how she makes money! And yeah, it's not like I just idolize the guy, but I love his music and his message and I think his hair looks cool, so I'm going for it.

I was going to stay out of this, but I just couldn't resist!
First, Nirvana's music is rock at it's dumbed down ugliest. I'm a musician, so I'm qualified to say this. I could teach a 7 year old to play anything Nirvana did in a matter of a couple of hours!
You may think his hair looks cool. That's okay. But for me, I prefer the look of CLEAN hair. Cobain's hair looked as if it were cut by a toddler and never washed or combed. But hey, like I say, to each his own. If that's what you want, go for it!
And finally, what exactly was Cobain's message? Life sucks and I want to die! Suicide is cool? If an overdose fails, blow your freaking head off? This is a guy who tried to get Courtney, his wife, to do a suicide pact with him which included killing their baby too. Some message!
And that's all I got to say 'bout that!

Just because you don't like Cobain's music, doesn't mean it's rubbish. You make it sound like Kurt was the devil, he certainly wasn't, he was just unfortunate enough to be addicted to heroin, and was generally a sad person. And that suicide pact thing you are on about is simply not true =p

Okay, so I took a boy less than 10 years old who had never even played the guitar, sat him down and we listened to a couple of Nirvana tunes. This kid was a guitar player wannabe, okay?
After less than two hours, he was playing the two songs as if Kurt Cobain himself would play them. We're talking a 10 year old boy who had never played the guitar before.
That's how simplistic and dumbed down Nirvana's music was. If that's the best you can write and play, then as a musician myself, I certainly will call it rubbish.
So he was hooked on drugs! Big deal! So are a lot of other people, but they aren't out there blowing their feeaking brains out!
And why was he so sad? He had youth, fame, good health, a ton of coin, and a skank to shag anytime he wanted it! What's to be sad about?
I don't think of him as the devil, except in a musical sense. He was the poster boy for grunge and the simplistic, almost non-music that came with it. He ushered in an era of bands who were worse than the teens in the garage next door. The early to mid 90s was a race to see who could suck the worst while still selling albums. Gone was anything even resembling complex chord changes or harmonies or anything even remotely melodic. In was music (if you can call it that) that a 10 year could play done by a bunch of guys who bathed once a year and never combed their hair doing songs about how bad life sucks!
The best thing to happen to music in my generation was the day Kurt Gobang painted the walls with his blood!

Wait a minute, the last time i saw kurt on TV was his un-plugged appearance, he had a very unkept looked, however, Kurt put thought into that, his hair looked like it had alot of product in it to me. I wash my hair daily, however i like using products. i'm willing to bet somebody put product in his hair and makeup on his face to make him look as angelic as he did. As far as his music, it was simple, however like Giorgio Armani has said " Simple is the hardest thing to be" Kurt was a sweet fellow with addictions and people with addictions still deserve love. I would of loved to go thrift shopping with him. He was so cool.

COME ON, let's not have a taste argument here! I don't give a fuck what you think about his music, I just thought I'd inquire with "those in the know" about his hair. His hair!
On the subject of simplistic music though, what's wrong with its being simplistic? Some of us like it that way. It's like saying, hey, I don't have to spend weeks in a studio to produce something that still sounds good. It all boils down to taste, and there is no objectivity in taste.
And when I talk about his "message," I mean, resisting faith and authority, doing what you want to do with your life and not what others want you to do with your life. Forgetting about "god and country" and being yourself. His suicide was the perfect expression of that.

Ask your mom how cavemens hair got long, they didnt cutt theres and it still grew long, tell your mom that your not going yo get it cutt to show her that it still grows just as fast and that its a waste of money to get it cutt.

Try to figure out how much longer the shortest hair you have has to get for it, then plan on it growing about half an inch a month. So, for example, if you needed another 5 inches, it would be about 10 months.
A cool thing about this all-one-length style (called a bob) is that it can be good at different lengths. I'm not really sure just how long Curt let his get. But if your parents or your school won't let your hair get really long, you could keep it at just above your shirt collar and it would still be good, a lot better than regular short hair.

For a style like this, getting trims isn't necessarily so bad. Go to a stylist and explain what your eventual goal is. The stylist can trim the hair that's longer, so that by the time the shorter hair catches up, it's all one length.

Not sure what else to tell you, except I have it and like it a lot.

To follow up on what Log-man said, I don't copy Curt's style to the extent of not washing my hair often enough to keep it clean and nice looking. I'd definitely recommend keeping it clean, using a good shampoo and separate conditioner.

I use Aussie moist shampoo & Aussie moist conditioner with good results.

Some will be better than others, but it mainly depends on the kind of hair you have, not it's length or style. The best I can recommend is to avoid really cheap bargain brands, and try some different kinds until you find one you like. If you don't mind paying more, I've found that the brands you buy in a salon really are better, at least for my hair. I used Redken. Also, I find that I really need a conditioner to get the tangles out after shampooing. Even if you could get the tangles out by pulling on your hair, that's very bad for it when it's wet.
